Finally embracing my naturalness!!!
Hello Ladies,
My name is NaToya and I am from the St. Louis area hoping to make some moves soon. Anywho, I have been natural for 4 years, now. And I went natural on accident. I went away to college in 2003, and knew that I was not letting anyone relax my hair. So I wore braids and would come home every two months or during breaks to get my hair rebraided. By this time I had grown out my relaxer and my beautician had the "natural hair" talk with me. I said no way and asked her to relax it. She did just that. For about another 2-3 years, I was dating a guy from Kansas City and allowed his aunt to relax my hair. Well this time I don't know if she got a hold to some bad MOtions or it was just too strong because it took my shoulder length hair to a cute little bob length and Ihad burns throughout. I was in turmoil. I did not know what to do with my hair. I went to one of her beauticians who cut my hair into a cute little bob but I was not elated about the style. So I just wore braids for about 6-8 months, then found a girl on campus who could do sew-ins. I found some cute curly afro hair and wore that for another four months. She then told me that I needed to cut the perm ends off because my hair was really breaking off. Welp, I said I guess Im going natural for real this time. I "big chopped" in 2007 and wore a mixture of sew-ins and braids. I found out I was pregnant in 2009 where my hair grew so much and I was excited. However, I still didn't embrace my naturalness. I just kept getting braids. In January 2011, I finally got health insurance and went to the doctor. She was of course African American and natural. She told me that I had a skin disease and the hair from the braids was inflaming my entire scalp and it was spreading to my face. I was in turmoil. Braids was all I knew. She told me the braids would have to come out and the hair I lost around my edges might not come back. I even have to see a dermatologist every 3-4 weeks. It was just this year that I finally embraced my natural hair and I am finally loving it. I love being able to do so many wonderful things with my hair that I wasnt able to do when it was relaxed. Most of all my hair has never been healthier. Its so funny now that I am single when I meet guys, the first thing I say is my hair is natural just to make sure they know that its a RARE occasion my hair will be straightened. Im just so intuned with my natural hair I love it. Im now going to post this and try out a style I saw on BlakIzBeautyful's Youtube channel.

wow, i love your story! i am wondering, how is your skin condition? did it improve since you no longer have braids? i had a bad sew in and my hair broke off BAD! my hair was see thru and i had never had see thru hair (i have thick hair). after that i cut all of my hair to the root. that was over 2 years ago.
