Significance of Njavarakkizhi
Ayurveda treatments involve a lot of distinct healing methods with herbs, rice, oil, water and other readily available natural resources. One such prominent treatment method is Njavarakkizhi. It is a kind of full body massage therapy. You can avail this treatment from any ayurvedic health resort or hospital, as per the directives of an ayurvedic practitioner.
Njavarakkizhi is part of the rejuvenation therapy along with dhara, pizhichil and oil massage. The practitioners also prescribe it for correcting neurological disorders. Patients having rheumatism, arthritis etc too can go for Njavarkkizhi and it seems to be very effective. Many patients with particular skin disorders, joint pains, rheumatism and bad cholesterol too usually undergo this therapy for 14 continuous days.
Njavarakkizhi is derived from two words – njavara and kizhi. While njavara refers to a kind of rice available in Kerala, the latter word refers to a cloth bag wrapping something inside. As the name indicates, Njavarakkizhi is a particular therapy which makes use of the medicinal property of njavara rice. In this therapeutic process, the masseurs press the kizhis (cotton clothes, containing boiled, medicated njavara rice) on the body of the client after keeping it for a while in warm medicated concoction. This process of fomentation seems to be very effective and it relieves the body pains, apart from providing nourishment to the tissues near the skin.
