12th mo. of transitioning & this is my 1st Forum!!
Hello everybody. My name is Shaunic and I am in month 12 of transitioning. My daughters hair inspired me to go natural.
My Mother gave me my first perm when I was around 10 years old and prior to perming my hair, she would press the hell out of it! LOL! Anyway, I started a blog and channel showing styles of my daughters hair and haven't really journalized my transition to my natural hair and probably won't. This is why.....I was a regular salon visitor when I was in my parents house and they were paying! I would get a touch up about every 6-8 weeks. When I would go, my stylist could never tell that I needed a touch up! Call me slow, but it didn't really hit home til the end of 2009 that maybe, just maybe, my hair doesn't need chemicals.
All the while, I'm combing my daughters long, thick, natural hair and saying to myself, "I will NEVER perm her hair". Although it was a pain to wash her hair and it took me forever to figure out how to manage it, her hair is so beautiful and healthy. Then I started to wonder what does my real hair look and feel like? So December of 2009, I decided not to perm my hair anymore.
The reason that I don't care to journalize it is because my transition phase isn't dramatic. I didn't do the BIG chop. I'm just letting it grow out and I'm finding it rather easy to maintain my natural hair. Don't get me wrong, so far the texture is different and when I wash it, it curls up like crazy but I'm loving it so far. I have about 3 inches of permed hair left. I'm not bold enough to cut it myself so I'll probably get it cut in February.
I'm still on the search for the perfect hair products to use so I'm looking forward to reading what you guys have to say about them! Anyway, I think I have rambled enough. I look forward to getting to know each of you while continuing my journey with you!
By the way, I've managed to get my Mom to go natural too!!
Peace,
Shaunic
