Hair Colors
Has anyone put any color in their hair since you've been natural? If so, does it change the texture of it? Do you use Permanent or Semi-Permanent Color? I would love to hear some feedback on this!

Re: Hair Colors
I dyed my hair last May. It didn't change my texture or damage it in any way. I used permanent hair color- just in the front of my head. The color didn't come out too strong though. A hairdresser friend of mine told me that with my hair in its natural state, the color may not have penetrated much. ARGGGG!
Re: Hair Colors
I'm 19mths natural and have never had any problems with coloring. My texture is still the same and I love it. Anytime you color, i suggest doing a DC treatment.
@NBO your hair may be low porosity which means it takes longer for your hair to process treatments (dc and color) due to the structure of your hairs shaft/cuticle. Just have to leave the color on a little longer but keep a close eye on it

Re: Hair Colors
@BGBH... How would I know if my hair is low porosity?
Even when using relaxers, it took a little longer than suggested.
I left the dye on the amount of time suggested because it was the first time I ever dyed my hair, & I didn't want my hair to go down the drain! LOL

The best way to test it that I've read and done is the 'Float test' http://keepitsimplesista.blogspot.com/2008/02/hair-porosity.html my hair is low porosity as well. I recently put blonde in my hair and was super nervous to leave it on longer than the alotted time but about 15-20 extra minutes did the trick perfectly.

I use Dark & Lovely (permanent) and also Carson-Sheen Hi Rez takes very well.
Re: Hair Colors
@BGBH Thanks! I will try the test. I also used the Hi Rez color. It was noticeable, but not nearly like the color on the box.
Re: Hair Colors
No color for me. I love my dark BLACK hair color.
I know many women that use color with no problems, but I also know many women that have used color and suffered lots of damage!
Now the thing with coloring your hair is you HAVE to take care of it more carefully then if there was no color. YOU HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF IT!! or you will have damage.
You have to take care of your hair whether it has color or not, but when your hair has color you have to take care of it in a different way. In a way that will keep the color from destroying your hair.

Re: Hair Colors
You are so right about taking care of your hair. When I had color in my relaxed hair,it made my hair so much thicker. I only want to cover the gray patch I have in the front of my hair. I don't want to go lighter. I'm thinking about permanent for the front and a rinse for the rest of my hair.

Re: Hair Colors
@Nicole and @Natural Black One - Could you tell us how you take care of your colored hair.
Maybe the two of you could make a new topic and list tips for taking care of color treated hair that everyone can add too.

Re: Hair Colors
Sorry! I didn't really do anything different... chalk it up to "first year natural ignorance".
My hair didn't seem to suffer with it either. But I won't be dying my hair again. I plan on using henna, and if I like it, that'll be it.

Re: Hair Colors

Re: Hair Colors
When I was relaxed, I used Bigen. I've always used better quality products on my hair because I have been a label reader for a very long time. When I did my BC last week, I used the Bigen again because I'm not ready to be a silver fox yet! Not sure what I'll do the next time. I didn't really notice any hardness or unusual dryness..I know the Bigen ingredients are not natural so I don't want to use it anymore, but i also don't want to sport my gray yet!
Re: Hair Colors
Apparently there are as many shades of hair color as there are different types of hair styles these days but for me i rather choose my natural color of my hair.

Re: Hair Colors
Color does not change the texture of Quality of natural hair if you use good products and get it done by some reputed professional. Hair color adds up to our personality and needs to selected on the basis of your style, skin tone, natural hair color and eye color. Always take advice on which color suits you best from a good stylist!
